Gall formation is a localized growth abnormality of plant tissues, often produced in response to insect oviposition. Anatomical and developmental stages in the growth of the vein pocket gall on the leaf of the red oak, (Quercus shumardii) were examined by light and electron microscopy. This gall results from oviposition by cecidomylid midges of the species, Macrodiplosis quercusoruca (Felt) (Johnson and Lyon, 1988) and causes characteristic alterations in leaf anatomy near the mid and major lateral veins. Affected leaves from a single tree were examined at various stages throughout gall development using light and scanning electron microscopy. When compared to control specimens a number of abnormalities were noted. These include an area of thick-walled papillate cells formed from the adaxial epidermis, individual larval chambers divided by septa, and an abaxial region in which cells are produced in ranks. Alterations of the abaxial epidermis are also discussed.
