Calvinist Christian day school education has its origins in sixteenth and seventeenth century European thought. The intellectual climate of the enlightenment and the reformation contributed to an educational environment significantly influenced by the teachings of Protestant reformer John Calvin, and enlightenment thinkers Locke, Descartes, Rousseau and Pestalozzi. The enlightenment influence of these thinkers had a profound affect on Dutch education and also Calvinist Christian day school education.Subjects--Topical Terms:

From their earliest origins in the Netherlands, Calvinist Christian day schools, under the umbrella of Christian Schools International, have been challenged by a search for distinctiveness amidst the realities of modern culture. Cultural upheavals such as World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, post-war immigration and the forces of modernity have impacted a growing subculture of Dutch Calvinists with regards to their faith and their commitment to Christian education. The centuries old cultural mandates of preserving a heritage and defending the faith have collided head on with the cultural dynamics of the twentieth century. These collisions have stimulated reactions in the form of isolation, conformation and transformation. The debates are ongoing, the implications far-reaching and the possibilities both glowing and threatening to generations of Americans less distinct culturally, ethnically and religiously than those who framed the debates in generations past.

The very same Spirit who convicted those who framed the debates of Christian schooling centuries ago, is the same Spirit who has guided fallable human beings through the cultural upheavals of the past four hundred years and who continues to direct their paths through this post-modern age and into the future. Perhaps the Spirit is common, perhaps not. But by uncovering the rich history and tradition of the Dutch Calvinist Christian day school movement and both its resistance and assimilation to cultural forces, I will search for evidence of a common Spirit between the earliest Calvinist Christian schools in the Netherlands and their contemporaries in modern day North America. The presence or absence of a common spirit will inevitably have ramifications for the future of Dutch Calvinist Christian education.
