Resilience has been explored within several populations: children from challenged home environments, clinical populations, and families which contain members with a disability. Measurement of resilience has been difficult due to the limited number of quantitative instruments available.

Methodological research was utilized in this study to develop and test the Scale of Resilience (SCORE) with parents of children with disabilities. Following a review of the literature, a model was conceptualized which contained nine constructs relative to resilience. The nine constructs were: meaningful sharing, meaningful network, adaptability, acceptance, positivism, valuing, spirituality, proactive coping, and self-awareness. The constructs were configured within the model to represent the multidimensional and complex nature of the concept, resilience.

Items were devised to measure each of those constructs. Systematic inquiry was guided by several theoretical frames of reference: phenomenology, life course, and systems. There were 96 items developed and submitted to a panel of experts for review. Of these 96 items, 64 items received 75% approval and were retained.

The 64-item instrument was pilot tested for readability and clarity of items. Questionable items were re-worded and modified. The revised instrument was again administered to a convenience sample of university students. Item analysis was performed to determine which items were discriminating. Preliminary studies established moderate levels of reliability and validity.

Based on data from pilot studies, the instrument was revised to contain 32 items and administered to a volunteer sample of parents of children with disabilities. Principal components analysis and factor analysis with Varimax rotation were performed. There were 8 factors that were identified. These factors and the number of items each contained were: meaningful sharing (3 items), meaningful network (7 items), adaptability (4 items), perceived control (4 items), and self-awareness (3 items). There was evidence for concurrent validity using the Family Hardiness Scale, the Family APGAR, and the Learned Helplessness Scale. Reliability for the instrument was.83.
