This study is an examination of the history of science in secondary school biology textbooks, specifically in relation to promote scientific literacy through the history of science. HsingChi Wang conducted a similar study in 1998. However, Wang examined the history of science content in secondary school physics textbooks (Wang, 1998). This study utilized Wang's methodology and applied it to secondary school biology textbooks. This study also re-examined and verified Wang's work and further translated, broadened, generalized and tested some of the key conclusions discovered during the 1998 study. This study also observed in depth and detail the history of science content within secondary school biology textbooks by providing an extensive content analysis. This study focused more specifically on secondary school biology textbooks because of the researcher's close connection to the discipline, and the history of biology. Seven current biology textbooks were collected, selected and analyzed based on their treatment of the history of science. The following research questions were the focus of this study: (1) what is the history of science in contemporary secondary school biology textbooks, and to what extent is the history of science included in current secondary school biology textbooks and (2) how is the rationale of including the history of science, reflected in contemporary secondary biology textbooks and what is the degree of alignment between the history of science inclusions found in current secondary school biology textbooks and the two science standards documents---Benchmarks for Science Literacy (AAAS, 1993) and the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996).Subjects--Topical Terms:

The findings of this study indicate that the standards documents have not sufficiently influenced the content included in the science textbooks examined and the understanding of the processes of science is unlikely when standards documents along with contemporary science textbooks focus mostly on science content knowledge through the history of science; the process and application of science should also be emphasized.
