The study was done in an effort to determine if there were philosophical similarities or differences between textbooks published by both Christian publishing companies and textbooks published by secular companies.

Studying the philosophical concepts of selected high school United States history basal textbooks was appropriate in order to help administrators, teachers, and parents have some knowledge of possible impressions created by the content of a specific textbook. Truth must be at the center of all that a textbook contains, for the impressions left by a textbook must represent United States history as it was, not as the author(s) and publisher desire it to be. This knowledge should provide a method for schools to determine the usefulness of a textbook in conjunction with a school's mission and purpose. Chapter 1 explored the power that textbooks have in influencing the values and beliefs of students.

Chapter 2 began with an analysis of the need for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a textbook. The chapter also explored the place of religious material in the contents of United States history textbooks and the philosophies they promote. The chapter looked at content analysis as a viable research method in identifying philosophical concepts.

Chapter 3 examined the methodological design to be used in the research study. The design is based on descriptive research using content analysis. The design used for the research was built around the categories found in Norman De Jong's Philosophic Ladder.

Chapter 4 was the presentation of the data collected in the research study. The data collected was presented in the form of raw data, tables, and statistical analysis.

Chapter 5 presented the data gathered in a statistical format using the computer program Non-numerical Unstructured Data * Indexing, Searching and Theorizing. The research questions were used to investigate and analyze the data collected from the textbooks used in the research study. Final conclusions from the study were identified as well as possible additional needed research.
