This dissertation is an exploratory study of racial bias in graduate level psychology textbooks. This study was an attempt to understand and uncover the underlying processes of racism as it exists in textbooks. Nine graduate level psychology textbooks were reviewed for this study. The textbooks were chosen from required courses from a psychology graduate program which purports to teach students to work from a multicultural perspective. A content analysis was implemented to explore themes of racial bias within the textbooks, as well as an exploration of appropriate treatment of racial/ethnic minority issues.

Three hypothesis were generated to assess for racially biased information within the textbooks, which included: (a) assumptions that the reader of the textbook is Caucasian, (b) assumptions that racial/ethnic minorities are not normal, and (c) stereotypic portrayals of racial/ethnic minorities. A fourth hypothesis included in this study was the belief that there would be examples of appropriate inclusion and non-stereotypic presentation of racial/ethnic minority issues within the textbooks. In addition, due to the exploratory nature of this dissertation, it was expected that unanticipated themes of racial bias and appropriate treatment of issues related to people of color would be found within the textbooks.

Results of this study found that racial bias did exists within the textbooks reviewed. Stereotyping of racial/ethnic minorities was found to contribute to the largest proportion of racial bias, followed by assumptions that the racial/ethnic minority is not normal with regards to psychological development. Assumptions that the reader of the textbook is Caucasian was also supported by this study, as well as appropriate inclusion and non-stereotypic presentations of racial/ethnic minorities. Finally, there were unanticipated themes of racial bias discovered within the textbooks. Implications of racial bias in the textbooks is discussed, along with limitations of the study, suggestions for future research and recommendations for change.
