Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2003.
The application of narrative theory to historical understanding raises interesting philosophical questions about our common perception of what is normally called the past. How narrative form and the role of the reader impact and affect an understanding of history is the subject of this paper. Traditional definitions of and purposes for historical study are explored, illustrating how most classical definitions ignore the narrative character of historical writing. The narrative nature of historical discourse is examined, suggesting that historical discourse possesses certain traits that make it story-like. The interactive nature between text and reader is discussed, demonstrating how historical narratives require the reader's imagination and ability to make certain connections in order to comprehend the text. Ultimately, the unavoidably selective content of the textual narrative and the subjective narrativity of the reader as he finds meaning through evolving connections processed in his mind make history a private and intimate affair.Subjects--Topical Terms:
