520 $a Using an ethnomusicological and historical approach, I argue that German Brazilian musical practice provides special and unique insights into the cultural, religious and social order of this societal group, past and present, and does not just memorialize the "Old World," but rather historically constructs and expresses their history in the "New World." German Brazilians form a history of change, in which music, consciously drawn from the past, is a powerful symbol of a contemporary world that reveals the way in which this ethnic group views, articulates, and represents it social, cultural, and religious identity in multicultural modern Brazil.
