This dissertation examines the role of Genoa's monasteries and churches in the use and development of land in Genoa and the surrounding countryside. The analysis of this thesis is based on the cartularies of five churches and monasteries in Genoa with extensive use of donation, exchange, sale or purchase, and rental contracts made between these institutions and their Genoese patrons. The institutions studied include the medieval city's two largest Benedictine houses, San Siro and Santo Stefano, the cathedral of San Lorenzo, the urban parish church of Santa Maria delle Vigne, and a smaller outlying Benedictine monastery, San Benigno di Capodifaro.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Through the analysis of the contract types mentioned above, this dissertation explores the relationships between the Genoese and their ecclesiastical institutions, the effects of urbanization and commercialization on the treatment of land and the contracts that express it, and the particular way individual sub-groups, such as women or artisans, interacted with the church in the land market. The different types of contracts are examined separately to determine which segments of the population dealt with each institution and to locate the geographical setting of the land they managed. The contracts are read carefully for changes that occurred in the language and intent of the contract type over time and for diverse contract uses by different members of society. This examination reveals that the Genoese churches and monasteries played an active role in the urbanization and development of the city as its population increased and its economy became more commercial in nature. Those churches or monasteries located in the heart of Genoa's most rapidly urbanizing districts showed the most flexibility and the swiftest transition to a commercial-based land economy. Those whose property lay primarily in the rural river valleys and hills behind Genoa changed more slowly, with less transformation to their contract types or clientele over time and less interest in promoting urban or commercial development on their land.
