As one of the most widely-read German authors of the nineteenth century, Gustav Freytag (1816--1895) was associated with the middle class and the progress it celebrated. His best-selling novel Soll and Haben (1855) and its lesser-known successor Die verlorene Handschrift (1864) owed their vast commercial success in no small part to their positive message of bourgeois accomplishment and the sense of momentum they convey. Yet even as these tributes to middle-class accomplishment herald progress, they devote significant attention to elements of traditional German society. Freytag's third major pre-unification work adds to this complexity: while his novels look eagerly forward, his enormously popular cultural history Bilder aus der deutschen Vergangenheit (1859--62) explores the German past.Subjects--Topical Terms:

My project examines this divergent---and ostensibly conflicting---focus of Freytag's works. While he aims to show his readers the extent to which they have evolved from their ancient predecessors, precisely this progress compels Freytag to look to history and show the constancy of the German character through the centuries. By both embracing progress and commemorating the past, Freytag helps to form a historically anchored national identity in which material and historical progress coexist with a rich heritage and ancient traditions. My investigation of the convergence of history and progress in the works of this best-selling author sheds additional light on the constructive function of the past in nineteenth-century Germany.

This dissertation consists of two parts. Chapters one and two provide a historical and conceptual background, showing first how Freytag welcomes the progress surrounding him, and then how he nevertheless draws attention to the continued relevance of history in the present-day. The second half of this dissertation examines thematic examples of the convergence of history and progress, illustrating how Freytag situates elements of pre-industrial Germany in his depictions of modern bourgeois society. Looking to his literary engagement with three central elements of Germany's historical identity---the pervasiveness of folk beliefs, a rurally based population and mentality, and the continued, albeit diminishing, presence of the aristocracy---I will show how Freytag attempts to locate these constituents of the past in a modern, industrial nation.
