Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2003.
This dissertation undertakes an intertextual examination of the works of Oscar Wilde and Lytton Strachey, one that reveals patterns of repetition and revision in their oeuvre and that seeks to clarify both Wilde's influence on Strachey and Strachey's overcoming of it. A significant parallel between Strachey and Wilde is the way their texts undermine the traditional delineation of gender roles using a rhetorical campaign of wit and irony often filtered through the medium of camp. This reading demonstrates that Wilde's dramatic works, in particular The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), An Ideal Husband (1895), and Salome (1891), informed Strachey's biographies, Eminent Victorians (1918), Queen Victoria (1921), and Elizabeth and Essex (1928), respectively. Indeed, in drawing on Wilde's early drama, Strachey refined it into his own genre of psychobiography, always anxiously engaging with his precursor. Characteristically, Strachey defends himself against Wilde with the predominant instrument they share---humor---playfully looking back to his forerunner in an attempt to assuage the anxiety he causes him.Subjects--Topical Terms:
