Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 2003.
This study examines the construction of identity Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (originally published 1795/96; Goethes Werke, ed. Erich Trunz, 10th edition, vol. 2. Munchen: Beck, 1981) and Die Wahlverwandtschaften (originally published 1809; Goethes Werke, ed. Erich Trunz, 10th edition, vol. 6. Munchen: Beck, 1981). I argue that identity develops through theatrical means, through the self-conscious practices that mark the work of actors. I depart from the scholarship on the Lehrjahre that focuses on theater as an institution. Instead, I approach "real life" and the construction of "authentic" identity as a mode of acting, of exchanging the purportedly real or authentic for a temporary personhood. I show that William and his friends blur the line between on- and off-stage life.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In Die Wahlverwandtschaften two sections deal specifically with theatrical practices: Luciane's and Ottilie's lebende Bilder and attitudes. These scenes, which have generated relatively little critical discussion, are the focus of my analysis. I argue that here theater is more than an institution. The amateur actresses step onto their makeshift stages ostensibly to portray other people, but in the process they reveal themselves. These less institutionalized forms of theater, lebende Bilder and attitudes, are discussed against the background of a move from the theatricality of eighteenth-century culture to a more domestic, private scale of life.

In Chapter One I define key terms and discuss the socio-historical background, focusing on pervasive attitudes toward theater and theatricality. Chapter Two examines the protagonist and other characters in the Lehrjahre . I show how the novel reveals the points that may be occupied along the theater-life continuum. In Chapter Three, I focus on scenes in Die Wahlverwandtschaften that underscore this blurred line between life on stage and off. In the conclusion I suggest ways in which my approach to theater may be applied in further studies on Goethe's works and on those of his contemporaries. Combined with theater's attendant social and historical associations, the approach may increase our understanding of the dynamics between life, theater, and the novelistic portrayal of both.
