A major challenge of survivable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network design is to decide where and how much the spare capacity should be placed, so that the network is resource efficient, and the interrupted traffic can be recovered in a very short time. Protection is the major way to solve this problem and prevent huge losses. Link protection and dedicated path protection dominate this fault recovery field currently with short recovery time and high resource efficiency.

A shared-path protection algorithm, Predetermined Protection-path Design (PPD), is developed in this thesis to recover the network link failure with short recovery time and high resource efficiency. Using PPD, each working path is protected by a link disjoint protection path, which is selected from five candidates. Four types of networks: partial mesh network, NSFNET, European Optical Backbone Network and random network were studied in this thesis. Simulation results show that. PPD achieves 28% better resource efficiency than dedicated path protection, and 12% better than conventional shared path protection. The advantages of PPD system are its short recovery time, good generality and scalability.
