The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate learning systems used by students when they participated in an international metal technology work-based learning exchange within a community college. This evaluative study contributed to the literature by producing 26 significant findings of work-based, sociocultural, language learning and global awareness and understanding within the students' learning systems. The interactive qualitative analysis methodology (Northcutt et al. 1998) was used to interview five metal technology students regarding their perceived value of learning both during the pre-departure and upon return phases of the exchange. The results of this study contributed to theory and practice. New knowledge was added to the theory of sociocultural and work-based learning and social capital. Finally, the study also contributed to practice by describing learning systems that can be used in planning international community college work-based learning exchange programs.

One of the major sources of significant work-based learning for the students during the exchange was the tangible result of an International Standards Organization certification award to all five students. The students' participation in the "Dual system" differed considerably from what they were used to in the United States. An interesting sidebar to this was how a beginning language class would be more helpful in learning a work-place skill than a specialized class in terminology. Another finding in language learning during the exchange was that they did learn what they needed out of necessity, however for the students to fully participate and not merely observe the world around them required a greater command of the language to expand their experience. A description of the students' experience in another country's culture underscores the need for the bigger picture of global awareness and understanding.

While much remains to be learned about student learning systems, this study initiated important new research. Future research should explore students' learning systems by taking into account the specific skills and language required.
