Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 1996.
This study, which is described in a narrative voice, tells the story of an innovative, arts-based approach to early childhood education from Italy called "The Reggio Approach." The study shows that young children develop strong relationships with the natural world through long-term, experiential projects, in which they are able to use language and visual arts media to explore and express their ideas. The study is based on the experience of the author in a one year internship in the municipally supported pre-primary schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, and efforts to adapt this approach in the American setting of a private, independent school in St. Louis, Missouri over a three year period. Rich description and analysis from both Italy and the United States of educational settings, the materials presented to the children, and small group conversations with young children are included.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The narrative also includes a qualitative, phenomenological study which follows seven, five and six year old children over an eight month period. The research presents a description of the conditions of a project on seeds and plants and an analysis of samples of children's dialogues, drawings, clay sculpture and writing from the eight month project. Interviews with the children after a time lapse of nine months are also analyzed as data.

This research demonstrates that given a prepared environment and the support of informed adults, children are able to develop strong voices in language and the visual arts which enable them to articulate knowledge of, feelings for and close relationships with the natural world.
