Disaster mental health clinicians can become vulnerable to stress reactions as a result of their work in disasters. Management of these stress reactions is crucial for the health of the clinician and the health of the clients served. However, current literature lacks intervention models designed specifically for disaster mental health clinicians following a disaster assignment. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a Post Disaster Assignment Recovery Manual that might bridge the gap between self-care strategies during the disaster assignment and intervention models that deal with on-going stress reactions after they have become problematic and chronic. The manual was designed for disaster mental health clinicians as a self-administered guide to address stress reactions immediately following a disaster assignment. This could help in the prevention of symptoms becoming chronic as well as help the clinicians integrate the experience into their worldview.

This dissertation included a thorough review of the literature on disaster mental health including stress reactions and interventions for victims, emergency service workers, and mental health clinicians. The Post Disaster Assignment Recovery Manual was then introduced as a multimodal, comprehensive, and integrated manual based on two schools of thought. The process of integrating the disaster mental health experience into the clinician's worldview is understood through the principles of the constructivist narrative approach. The concepts of multimodal therapy (Lazarus, 1981) provide the structure for assessing stress reactions and determining helpful stress-management and self-care techniques. The manual was designed in an eight-day format that would provide disaster mental health clinicians with (a) tools for assessment of stress reactions; (b) an opportunity to develop and apply appropriate stress management and self-care techniques to address stress reactions; and (c) an opportunity for the development of a narrative about their disaster mental health experience, which then might be integrated into their worldview. Benefits and limitations are discussed along with suggestions for research on the manual and possible future directions.
