The problem of this study was to construct a valid and reliable scale to measure safety climate and to develop an explicative model of unsafe work behavior that included the following contributory factors to unsafe work behavior: (a) Perceived safety climate, (b) perceived hazard level, (c) perceived work pressure, (d) perceived risk, and (e) perceived barriers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study was a cross-sectional non-experimental study using a 98-item survey questionnaire. Data were collected from 722 U.S. grain industry workers in 102 different locations of a multi-national grain company. The instrument was developed through a table of specifications, subsequent scientific item reduction procedures, experts' review, and pilot test. Each item of the 30-item safety climate scale was found to have proper discriminative power based on both internal and external criteria. Criterion validity of the safety climate scale was manifested by the significant positive correlation of the scale with that developed by Brown et al. (2000), with self reported percentage of safety compliance, and with 15 representative safety behaviors. The criterion validity was further affirmed by the significant negative correlation of the scale with the experience of accidents and near-misses.

Evidence of construct validity of the safety climate scale was provided by both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The finding of the CFA using LISREL program was cross-validated by splitting the sample into two halves. Both calibration sample and validation sample supported a consistent factor structure and all the major fit indices indicated good fit of the model to both data sets.

Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) followed by stepdown analysis was conducted to test the effects of shift-work and length of employment for the same company on six dependent variables that included five contributory factors to unsafe work behavior. Significant differences existed between spilt-workers and full-time day workers and among workers of different length of employment for the same company on the dependent variables. The six-construct model to explain unsafe work behavior was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). All the major fit indices indicated good fit of the model to the data.
