Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2002.
Two essays investigate the importance of early childhood and labor market shocks on long-run outcomes. The first essay examines the effect on the long-run labor market outcomes of adults who were assigned, when young, to substantially different public housing projects in Toronto. Administrative data are matched to public housing addresses to track children from the program for over 20 years. The main finding is that neighborhood quality plays little role in determining a youth's adult earnings, education attainment, or welfare participation, but does affect exposure to crime. The second essay explores the importance of easily observable characteristics in determining initial job placement and career opportunity. When wage progression depends on initial job placement, the effects of statistical discrimination on long-run wages are exacerbated. A new approach is adopted for testing this behavior. The results provide evidence that employers select MBA and law graduates into top firms based, at least in part, on what school they graduated from, and that this behavior affects long-run wages.
