Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 1996.
Video is an important component in multimedia information systems. A digital video library of the future will contain large collections of material from a wide variety of sources. Unfortunately, video data is difficult to manage because of its size and the scarcity of tools and techniques available for efficient access, delivery and storage, search and retrieval in database systems. This thesis addresses the various aspects of video data management by proposing new algorithms, models, representations and techniques for the automatic analysis of video content, modeling of its visual and temporal characteristics, meaningful visualization of video content and succinct presentation that summarizes the essential semantics. The algorithms and techniques developed are used for digital library applications such as browsing, navigation, organization, and presentation of video collections. The thesis work represents a new and integral video analysis framework, offers fresh perspectives on the characterization of content and subsequent compaction of video, and achieves meaningful segmentation and presentation of underlying story beyond any existing means.
