The purpose of this study was to determine what should be taught in business education programs as we approach the twenty-first century.

A survey instrument was constructed listing fifty-five subject titles. Fifty-two national leaders in the field of business education were selected to participate in the study. Forty-four, or eighty-five percent responded.

The results of this study indicate that there is a need for change in the business education curriculum across the country. National leaders are in agreement that the curriculum must emphasize computer skills and applications replacing the traditional curriculum of secretarial preparation.

Information Systems must become the dominant sequence in the curriculum. Business education programs must be funded with larger budgets to allow department heads to purchase an ample number of computers for infusion in the teaching of all business courses.

This study provides valuable information for supervisors in the field of business education in making curriculum revisions as they prepare for the 21st century. The past ten years have been troublesome to business educators as enrollments in many programs have been eliminated. One of the major reasons for these decreases has been the slow changes in curriculum to reflect the technological advances in the field. The results of this study indicate the need for changes in not only course titles but in the entire image that business education projects to the outsiders. We must change completely the image of business education so that those who are not in the field realize that it is a program to support academics with technology and computer applications and to prepare citizens to live and work in a technologically advanced global economy. Business Education should no longer be thought of as a program that prepares secretaries and clerks who dispatch paper clips and take dictation.
