Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 1990.
One purpose of the dissertation is to respond to the 'end of ideology' school that began with Daniel Bell and others in 1955. Their theory is criticized on the basis of a review of the historical development of the concept of 'ideology' from de Tracy and Marx, through Durkheim, Weber, and Mannheim, up to recent theorists. The review shows the theoretical shallowness of the concept of ideology used by the 'end of ideology' school.Subjects--Topical Terms:

One purpose of the dissertation is to respond to the 'end of ideology' school that began with Daniel Bell and others in 1955. Their theory is criticized on the basis of a review of the historical development of the concept of 'ideology' from de Tracy and Marx, through Durkheim, Weber, and Mannheim, up to recent theorists. The review shows the theoretical shallowness of the concept of ideology used by the 'end of ideology' school.

A second purpose is to demonstrate the importance of ideological influences in interaction with social structural determinants of the perceived quality of life (subjective well-being, life satisfaction). After a review of the literature, hypotheses are formulated and tested with Norwegian survey data from the same subjects in 1970 and in 1984. Three measures of ideology are developed and treated as intervening variables between social structure and life satisfaction.

In keeping with previous research, the relationships between social structural and life satisfaction variables are relatively weak. But curvilinear, interactional and longitudinal measures contribute additional predictive power. The influence of structural variables on ideology and on life satisfaction is strongest at the higher levels of income and education. Though support is initially found for a relationship between conservatism and life satisfaction, when interactional and longitudinal measures are used, more support emerges for a relationship between liberalism and life satisfaction.

A number of suggestions are made about implications for research and action: Theoretical constructions of ideology should not exclude unconscious, unorganized, and pro-establishment ideologies. Studies should include curvilinear, interactional, and longitudinal measures. Multiple measures of social structure and ideology are needed. Increased income, if not accompanied by the liberalizing influence of education, is likely to lower rather than raise life satisfaction. Efforts to improve job satisfaction should stress opportunities for workers to use and develop aptitudes and influence at the workplace.

The final conclusion is that ideological value orientations interact with social positions as an important influence on the perceived quality of life. The final recommendation is that ideologies should not be dismissed from political sociology, and value orientations should not be overlooked in research on the quality of life.
