The tribe Nystaleini Forbes (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Notodontidae) is revised using adult morphological characters and cladistic analysis. This revision includes a review of previous taxonomic treatments of the family, adult and larval biology, and host plant records. The first comprehensive treatment of adult morphological structures of notodontids (including the Dioptidae) is presented. Conflicting terminologies for internal tympanal structures are reconciled, and new terms are proposed for novel structures.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The phylogenetic analysis employed Wagner algorithms present in PAUP and PHYSYS, successive approximation of character weighting and transformation series analysis. These results are compared to analyses with all characters coded according to the Fitch minimum mutation model (unordered).
520 $a Three final cladograms resulted: NYST8.wei, NYST9.wei, and unordered NYST8/9. Two of these agree on the tribe as defined by Forbes; one does not. In these cladograms, the Heterocampini is paraphyletic. The Hemiceratini is paraphyletic with respect to the Dioptidae. The hemiceratine-dioptine clade is placed either as the sister-group to the clade defined by the callosum (=Nystaleini Forbes) or within that clade. In both NYST8.wei and NYST9.wei, the Nystaleini is divided into the Dasylophia-clade and the Nystalea-clade. Character support for the different cladograms is discussed, and the NYST8.wei topology is preferred.
520 $a Nomenclature changes reflect a consensus of the three final cladograms. The status of the Dioptidae is changed to tribe. The taxonomic status of the Hemiceratini and Heterocampini requires further study. The Nystaleini is restricted to the Nystalea-clade and consists of eighteen genera. The Dasylophia-clade (six genera) is placed as incertae sedis. Three new genera, Ankale, Kryptokalos, and Lyricinus, and two new species, Elymiotis bicornis, Elymiotis tripartita, are described. There are seven generic synonymies, and two previous junior synonyms are resurrected as valid genera. A key to genera, generic descriptions, illustrations of male and female genitalia, and a checklist is provided for the Nystaleini and the Dasylophia-clade.
