The Castniinae, a subfamily of the Castniidae and a group critical to the understanding of the higher classification of the Lepidoptera, ranges from Mexico south into Argentina and Chile. The Castniidae incorporate features of both butterflies and moths including bright coloration and a diurnal flight period with unique life history strategies among larger Lepidoptera.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Included in this revisionary study is a historical review of the literature and a critical evaluation of the taxonomic characters. An appraisal of the general biology and morphology, in addition to examination of taxonomic characters, biogeography, and the higher classification of the neotropical Castniinae (Castniini, Castniidi) resulted from analysis of the morphological features of 30 genera and five subgenera. The possible mimetic associations of the neotropical Castniinae with other lepidopteran families and potential strategies against predators are presented and discussed.

Taxonomic keys to the subfamilies, Tasciniinae and Castniinae, and to the subtribes of the Castniini, Castniidi and Synemoniidi, are provided. A separate key to the genera and subgenera of the Castniidi is also presented. Diagnoses and descriptions to the genera including illustrations of the wing venation, palpi, male and female genitalia, as well as discussion of the geographic distribution for each generic taxon are included. New taxa described include one genus, Escalantiana, one subgenus, Daguana, and one species, Castnius eumaeus. Additionally, a replacement name, Gazera peruviana praeceptor, is proposed to replace a junior homonym.

Phylogenetic analysis of the morphological data generated by the studies summarized above was conducted, utilizing three separate approaches. These analyses establish conclusively that more than one single genus is represented in the subtribe Castniidi. A discussion of the phylogenetic relationships and comments concerning cladistic classification are also presented.

The geographic distribution of the neotropical Castniinae and the biogeographical significance of this subfamily with a Gondwanaland distribution is postulated in the light of dispersalist and vicariance theories. The origin of the Castniinae and the possible interrelationships of the neotropical Castniidi with closely related taxa within the Lepidoptera are also explored.
