The vocalizations of a captive group of Celebes Black apes (Macaca nigra) were recorded over the course of 13 months. The group consisted of two adult males, nine adult females and 11 juveniles and infants. A total of 808 calls were analyzed using the Kay Sona-Graph Model 6061-B. The amplitude and spectral characteristics of these calls are described in detail. In addition, brief descriptions of the associated behavior are given.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Based on acoustic characteristics, the repertoire of the adult Celebes Black ape was found to consist of 13 calls. The majority of Black ape calls are emitted in agonistic situations. These include three related call categories of "pants" which seem to function as intraspecific threats. Another set of related call categories includes three types of "barks" which seem to function both as intraspecific and interspecific threats. Female Black apes were found to emit four different types of submissive calls: three related "squawks" and one type of "squeal". Females also emitted an affiliative call, the "coo". Two call categories were emitted only by the dominant male: a "copulatory chuck" and a "resonant bark".
520 $a The vocalizations of Macaca nigra were compared to those of other macaque species. There appear to be some similarities between the vocalizations of Macaca nigra and those of Macaca mulatta, Macaca arctoides and Macaca nemestrina.
