A new method for functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and C60 by titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the presence of UV light and the sunlight has been described here. The UV light experiments were carried out at various temperatures. Photocatalysis by TiO2 most likely proceeds by generation of hydroxyl radicals. However, secondary compound can be oxidized by TiO2 and the resulting species can attach to the surface of the carbon nanotube. We used ammonia and toluene reagents for this purpose. When the UV light experiment was carried out with SWNTs and TiO2 at higher temperature (>95°C), a broad peak was observed at about ∼3300 cm-1 in ATR-IR spectrum. It shows that the hydroxyl group is probably being attached to the surface of the carbon nanotube. The broad peak in ATR-IR (∼3300 cm-1 ) also appeared when ammonia was used with TiO2 and SWNTs/C 60 in the presence of the sunlight and the UV light. The results were also confirmed by Raman, SEM, and EDAX analysis.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In the other experiment, filling of the silver in single-wall carbon nanotubes was carried out by using silver nitrate, water, and hydrochloric acid. In this experiment, silver nitrate was dissolved in minimum amount of distilled water. Then, the HCl was added to the solution. The samples were analyzed by EDAX and SEM.
