Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 2003.
My objective in this thesis is to examine representations of ideology and utopianism in three novels by Isabel Allende: La casa de los espiritus (1982), De amor y de sombra (1984), and Eva Luna (1987). This Chilean writer has been extensively studied from various perspectives: feminist criticism, exile literature, magical realism, etc. My intention is to present an angle that provides a sociopolitical perspective on the novels.

The first chapter explores the many definitions of utopia and utopianism as either literary genres or as political forces driving towards change. Our premise is that a view of the utopian is always intertwined with an idea about the ideological; there is no judgement about a society that is value free, and a utopia is a critique of society. That exploration leads us to the second chapter, in which we set the parameters of the ideological approach; we consider three different levels and functions of the ideological, as set out by Paul Ricoeur: ideology as distortion, as legitimation, and as integration. Chapter three examines how and when those two driving forces---the ideological and the utopian---collide in the fictional world of Allende's novels; particular attention will be paid to the idea of political power, as embodied in the authoritarian state and the military junta. To illustrate this idea, we examine the literary configuration of the male characters in Allende's novels. The forces that oppose the ideological stance are displayed in two forms: the individual rebel, the revolucionario, and the collective one, the guerrilla movement; both represent the utopian impulse for change. Chapter four presents a deeper analysis of the struggle for power, now as it appears in the tension between the sexes. Here we examine aspects of the patriarchal structure of Chilean society as it is depicted in Allende's novels, and the emergence of feminist and political consciousness in the female characters. We also examine the many ways in which the author suggests forms of transgression of the patriarchal modes of heterosexism and sexism; among those forms of transgression, we consider representations of homosexuality, lesbianism, and incest.
