This study is a close analysis of four Mexican writers of the border and one chicano author. Specifically, I examine Madero, el otro (1989) by Ignacio Solares, La frontera de cristal (1995) by Carlos Fuentes, La senora de la Fuente (1996) and Cronicas desde el pais vecino (1998) by Luis Arturo Ramos, La Genara (1995) by Rosina Conde, and Peregrinos de Aztlan (1974) by Miguel Mendez. In this select group of novels we see a resurgence of the regional novel that describes the border space as one where cultures collide and hybrid languages originate from this particular "third" space. In Madero, el otro, Solares explores the many inner psychological borders of Francisco I. Madero, and the influence of the U.S. on Mexican Affairs during the Mexican Revolution. In Carlos Fuentes's La frontera de cristal, the author portrays the experience of a very different group of border crossers: cooks, maids, taxi drivers, students, all of which center around the figure of Leonardo Barroso. For Fuentes the border is "an open wound" and by exploring the different languages, or heteroglossia, he tries to heal the wounds that have separated Mexico and the United States. In the view of Luis Arturo Ramos, the border is a postmodern opportunity to criticize the crisis of truth and modernity of the American Empire, like he does in La senora de la fuente. And in more detail he criticizes the paradoxes that take place in the border with his sharp ironic eye in Cronicas-desde el pais vecino. In the last chapter, I study the marginal discourse of La Genara by Rosina Conde and Peregrines de Aztlan by Miguel Mendez, a novel that establishes a link between Mexican and American Literature. Both novels take place in the border city of Tijuana and employ the colloquial language of this space.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Additionally, I explore how these works of fiction can transform our image of the border from a place to protect to a place to understand, with its own history, language, customs and inventive cultural expressions.
