For nearly forty years, C. Loring Brace has been arguing that facial and dental reduction occurred more rapidly during the Middle Pleistocene period because hominids were cooking their food as well as using more sophisticated tools. As there was less physical stress on the teeth, dental reduction occurred more rapidly during this time, thus changing the facial morphology of early hominids in a very short period of time. While Brace studied the biological aspect (human fossils), this research examined the archaeological aspect (hearths) to determine whether facial and dental reduction seen in early hominids could be related to food cooking.

If Brace is correct, hearths should become more numerous and more complex over time. Also, cooking and fire evidence such as burned bones and fire-cracked rocks should increase over time. Analogies were made between the archaeological and ethnographic records to determine whether there were similar patterns in food processing and food cooking. At present, one can only conclude that there is not enough archaeological evidence to support Brace's hypothesis of cooking.
