Thesis (M.A.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 2003.
In the last few decades, the concept of ideology has become the object of analysis in social theory. The analysis of ideology and its modes of operation and reproduction has taken two main forms, i.e., positive conception of ideology and critical conception of ideology. In examining the distinction between these two conceptions of ideology, this thesis argues that the positive conception of ideology is heavily influenced by functionalism and/or structural-functionalism. The consequences of this influence are a failure to appreciate social contradictions and an inability to specify the precise nature of the relationship between the various spheres of production within a historically specific form of social life. Also, this thesis argues that a critical conception of ideology adequate to the contemporary social historical world, which is highly complex, uneven, socially contradictory and temporally non-synchronous, must draw on Marx's critical conception of ideology, and his critique of political economy as critique of ideology. This means that Marx broke with the positive tradition that conceptualized ideology as conceptual system, critically locating it in the political economy, in social-historical practices which sustains the exploitative social relations and relations of domination. This thesis argues that political economy must be understood as ideology, which is equal to domination. Thus, a reformulated critical conception of ideology is intimately connected to the critique of political economy as critique of ideology.
