Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2003.
This work problematizes business school formation during the 1960s as a stage in the professionalization of British business management. In reconstructing the political and economic circumstances surrounding the business schools' creation the thesis illustrates various contemporary expectations for the field of management education. Throughout the thesis, the background, formative details and subsequent impact on the economy of the first two British business schools are explored in two ways: first, the study highlights the paradox between industrial support for management education as such and later unwillingness to hire the graduates of business schools. Second, it suggests that the formation of business schools may be viewed as a case study of post-war Americanization. The work emphasizes that business school advocates faced entrenched resistance to academic management programs arising from competing methods of preparation for business careers as well as the academic establishment. The thesis demonstrates that the creation of American style management education institutions reflected British desires to elevate the social status of business management practitioners and simultaneously improve business performance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
