The present study investigated differences between preadolescent beauty pageant participants and nonparticipants on eating behaviors and body image. Forty-six girls in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades completed the Eating Behaviors and Body Image Test for Preadolescent Girls and the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. The results were not consistent with initial predictions. Multivariate and univariate analyses showed that girls who had competed in three or more pageants endorsed fewer Binge-Eating Behaviors than control participants. In addition, girls who had participated in one or two pageants had significantly higher total scores on the measure of self-esteem than the control participants. Potential reasons for these findings are discussed, and future research possibilities are presented.
