Conflict is inevitable, especially in highly stressed environments. Nationally and professionally, anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) have always been in conflict. The literature reveals that anesthesiologists and CRNAs differ in their views on independent practice, reimbursement, education and research, each of which can be a source of conflict. Because clinical environments marked by nurse-physician conflict are potentially counterproductive to patients and their health outcomes, professional health education programs and employers have a responsibility to recognize that people approach conflict differently and provide opportunities for multidisciplinary audiences to learn and develop conflict management skills and thereby change the interpersonal environment.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This doctoral project reports the findings of a study of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists regarding their perceptions of the ways they manage conflict in the high stress environment of the operating room, as measured by the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II) survey instrument. The organizational structure factors contributing to conflict were identified, a prerequisite for the appropriate development and implementation of intervention strategies. Additionally, strategies are suggested, as well as areas for future research.
