Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2004.
The current study was used to determine the influence of a self-efficacy-based substance abuse prevention curriculum on increasing knowledge of substance use, developing life skills to resist substance use, and improving self-efficacy to instill the belief that preadolescents can resist the pressure to consume alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Eighty-nine 10-year-old participants in the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) began the study at Weber State University. Out of the 89 participants, 78 completed the 5-week period. The preadolescents selected for the current study were from lower socioeconomic environments as verified by admission into the NYSP.Subjects--Topical Terms:

An analysis of the data revealed the following significant findings: Both statistical tests (F test [F = 109.6, p < 0.001] and Wilcoxon dependent signed-rank test [z = 7.53, P < 0.00]) detected that the self-efficacy-based and knowledge-based substance abuse programs produced significant improvement in knowledge test scores. Both statistical tests (F test [F = 35.40, P < 0.001] and Wilcoxon dependent signed-rank test [ztest = 6.42, P < 0.00]) detected that the self-efficacy-based and knowledge-based substance abuse programs produced significant improvement in knowledge of life skills test scores. The F test (F = 73.40, P < 0.001) detected that the self-efficacy-based substance abuse program produced significant improvement in self-efficacy test scores over the knowledge-based program; however, a significant effect was not supported by the Wilcoxon test. The Wilcoxon test (Zinitial (c x t) = 2.10, P < 0.04) to final test (1zfinal (c x t) = 0.72, P = 0.48) detected that the self-efficacy-based substance abuse program produced significant improvement in composite test scores; this finding was not supported by the F test ( F = 0.74, Power = 0.14). This information suggests that the self-efficacy-based substance abuse prevention curriculum is effective in increasing the dependent variables of knowledge, life skills, and self-efficacy but is not superior to the traditional knowledge-based curriculum.
