In order to stem the rising cost of training, businesses are looking for more efficient, effective methods for training. One such strategy involves distance learning, including computer-based training (CBT). The problem is ensuring that different delivery methods of CBT yield similar results in terms of employee knowledge retention. The study compared knowledge retention rates of an experimental group who took CBT at their desktops against the retention rates of a control group who completed their training in a learning center environment where the conditions were controlled and predictable. The hypothesis was that the unpredictability of the desktop environment would result in lower rates of knowledge retention than those of the participants in the learning center group. To determine that participants perceived a difference between the two different learning environments, an 8-question learning environment survey was administered to both groups. A 50-person sample population from each group was tested 30 days after the original training took place and a t-test analysis was conducted. The results of the survey indicated participants did perceive the environments were different. Post training testing, however, revealed no statistical difference between the two groups in terms of knowledge retention.Subjects--Topical Terms:
