The study of enacting the Christian understanding of infant communion is a gift to the larger church. This project seeks to make a contribution to pastoral theology and praxis by equipping leaders of the church, as they expand the present liturgical praxis in their ministerial context. There is a thorough theological background to equip leaders of the church in forming their faith community as it appropriates an understanding of the sacraments as gift. This project exhibits the need for catechesis, as the pastor helps to empower the congregation. Finally the project exhibits an important and helpful framework for the pastor, as the pastor promotes a theological teaching of infant communion within the current modern ministerial context.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The project invites a local congregation (Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Canton, Ohio) to explore the possibility of admitting baptized infants to the Eucharist, as a response to the gift of God's grace. The project explores the Christian theological roots of baptism and Eucharist, describes the baptized people of God and explains the purpose of baptism and Eucharist as sacraments of Christian initiation. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America teaches that the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist are gifts from God that cannot be earned by any individual.

The project explores early Christian practices of infant communion, and the Eucharist as sacramental gift completing Christian initiation. The project explores the current practices of infant communion in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The project examines the practice of infant baptism in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in order to understand why the rite of baptism is or is not perceived as the entry point for participation in the Eucharist.

The project presumes that when the sacramental gift of the Eucharist is withheld from some of the baptized community, access to God's free gift of presence and grace is diminished. Utilizing the experience of the Zion Lutheran Church as a typical Lutheran faith community, the project proposes the need for a more thorough catechesis on a wider liturgical practice of the entire Christian initiation process---bath, chrismation and table---and its implications for full Eucharistic participation.
