The purpose of this study was to examine and demonstrate an ecological approach to recreation and resource management and planning with data from Isle Royale National Park, Michigan. Application of the ecological approach can help managers and planners provide for sustainable places and recreation opportunities.

Ecological perception theory is central to the approach and suggests that humans realize events while perceiving and acting within the environment. That is, we perceive patterns and styles of change in the environment. These perceived events or disturbances can afford benefits or negative impacts. More simply, events involve something happening to something (or someone) in time and space. They are unfolding stories that can overlap with other stories at various spatial and temporal scales. For example, visiting an attraction area in a park can be nested with other events such as spending money at a hotel. These events can be part of a larger event such as a strengthened local economy.

The ecologically valid, holistic, integrative, overlapping, and hierarchical nature of events can help outdoor recreation managers promote sustainable places by acknowledging fundamental ecological limits, striving for a high quality of life, promoting collaboration among stakeholders, and striving for equitable and just policies. To demonstrate how this approach to research and planning might work, qualitative and quantitative data about three leisure events were collected at Isle Royale National Park during tile summer (July–September) of 1997. The three leisure events include: (1) traveling to the Windigo campground (west end of the island), (2) traveling within the island interior (away from the developed ends of the island), and (3) traveling to the Rock Harbor campground (east end of the island).

The study findings suggest that the three leisure events are distinct recreation opportunities, requiring different management prescriptions. Traveling to Windigo and Rock Harbor are relatively uneventful to visitors when compared to traveling within the vibrant island interior. Managers can enhance these opportunities by changing ferryboat schedules, enhancing interpretation and educational programs, and reducing campground crowding during peak visitor use periods. Other management actions and future research implications are discussed.
