Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 1997.
The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the relationship among factors affecting near transfer trouble shooting technological problem solving skills. Data were collected from 14 maintenance technicians employed in light manufacturing (Standard Industrial Classification, (SIC) 366) in the central region of Missouri. A correlational design was used to ascertain the relationship(s) between five predictor variables (i.e., cognitive content knowledge and style, years of technical on-the-job trouble shooting experience, critical thinking skills, and technological problem solving style) and the criterion variable (i.e., near transfer trouble shooting technological problem solving skills). To quantify near transfer trouble shooting technological problem solving skills, the design employed a timed authentic simulation exercise where a series component and system faults were inserted into an automated manufacturing cell. In addition, a qualitative component was employed to further probe the thought processes used during critical decision-making and information processing junctures in the technological trouble shooting exercise.

Several Pearson r combinations were initially computed in order to construct a model that would be subsequently analyzed through regression procedures. Internal estimates of consistency reliability for most predictor variables were within or exceeded values established from previous studies. The independently scored and recorded rater assessments of individual trouble shooting performance yielded a strong interrater correlation of 0.98.

Rank ordering of the Pearson r correlation coefficient predictor/criterion variable associations was as follows: (a) years of experience; (b) cognitive technical knowledge; (c) critical thinking skills; (d) field dependence/independence; and (e) technological problem solving style (confidence, approach/avoidance, and personal control). Due to low correlation coefficient values and a large shared variance or overlap with other high correlation predictor/criterion variable combinations, two predictor variables (i.e., cognitive styles and technological problem solving style) were excluded from the analysis of the multiple linear regression model. Multiple linear regression analysis detected a combined shared variance (R

of the three top ranked predictor variables (i.e., years of experience, cognitive knowledge, and critical thinking skills) with the criterion variable of 45.3%.

When combined, the top three ranked predictor variables are particularly strong predictors of near transfer technological problem solving skills. Based on the results, employers should focus on training programs that develop and enhance cognitive technical knowledge and critical thinking skills. In addition, employee hiring practices for maintenance technicians should screen for and assess cognitive technical knowledge and critical thinking skills.
