This thesis introduces a point-to-point error correction scheme for real-time multimedia applications. As the Internet technology becomes more and more popular, real-time applications over computer networks are more widely used. Usually, the multimedia traffic is transmitted through a UDP channel, which does not guarantee that packets ever reach the destination host. Therefore, some packets are lost and the quality of multimedia applications is affected, especially over the Internet. It is necessary to design an error correction scheme that minimizes the packet loss rate. Basically there are two ways to recover the lost packets: ARQ (Automatic-Repeat-Request) and FEC (Forward Error Correction). ARQ is not suitable for real-time applications because of its long latency. In this thesis, a FEC method combined with an interleave algorithm is implemented and evaluated. The performance of the scheme is studied in an application called EduServer. In this project, the scheme was evaluated under a variety of network conditions. Our FEC approach achieves constant end-to-end delay. It also uses the network bandwidth efficiently.Subjects--Topical Terms:
