Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 2003.
The objective of this thesis is to generate a time series of maps showing the simulated distribution of forest cover in Central America from 1880 to 2000 in ten-year intervals. Estimates of the amount of forest cover present for each point in time—1880, 1890, 1900, etc—were obtained from existing spatial and non-spatial data or were extrapolated from the forest cover data for each country. To convert these non-spatial estimates of forest cover into a time series of maps, I used GEOMOD, a spatially explicit model of Land-Use Change (LUC), to simulate the distribution of forest cover for each ten-year period. Using the available spatial data for 1920, 1994, and 2000,I tested GEOMOD's ability to recreate changes in forest cover between those points in time. I ran GEOMOD from 1920 to 1994 and from 1994 to 2000 and performed a validation analysis of the results using the maps derived from remote sensing for 1994 and 2000 respectively as validation maps. These model runs clearly demonstrate that GEOMOD is capable of replicating the documented changes in forest cover between 1920 and 1994 and between 1994 and 2000 more accurately than could be expected due to random chance alone. Based on the analyses of spatial data from 1920 to 1994 and 1994 to 2000, I then set up GEOMOD to simulate the changes in forest cover for the entire period from 1880 to 2000 using a series of model runs. The result of these model runs is a new time series of maps of forest cover for the entire 120-year period. These maps now can be used with caution to inform other studies such as studies of the role of tropical forests in the global carbon cycle. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)Subjects--Topical Terms:
