The history and status of the Internet as a means of free expression in Singapore is analyzed. Since the People's Action Party came to power in 1959, it has systematically dismantled the rights and protections to freedom of speech and press that are the progeny of the English Bill of Rights and the accepted practice in countries that rightfully bear First World status.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The government of Singapore has asserted control over its local press and tried to bully the international media into self-censorship by omission. It has denied its own citizens the right to free expression through traditional means such as public speaking, periodicals, broadcast and motion imagery.

The people of Singapore and those concerned about its future have tried to use the Internet as a mode of alternative expression with some success and some failure in the face of government hostility. Overall, the outlook is positive.
