Virtual teams exist within American businesses as physically separated offices and virtual work arrangements. This research begins with the premise that organizational teamwork positively contributes to creativity and productivity through relationships and communications. Examined are what effect virtual work arrangements have upon teamwork and productivity, factors negating the will and desire for employees to conduct their work at traditional office locations, and whether technological advances have replaced or reduced the need for face-to-face team interactions. The research concludes that face-to-face communications are negatively impacted by virtual work arrangements, the 24/7 workplace, and technology-related influences. Also identified is a growing trend by industry to focus on the real estate savings of virtual work programs to the exclusion of lost creativity and teamwork.
