The relationship of risk and protective factors are explored to study their impact on dating violence among African American adolescents. A sample of 476 African American students who attend school in the Englewood community are examined. Although much is known about dating violence among adolescents, not much is known about the risk and protective factors for dating violence among African American adolescents. Data from an earlier data set are used to identify if a relationship exists between age, number of dating partners, attitudes, and relationship skills and dating violence victimization and perpetration. The role of gender and dating violence is also explored. Measures consist of four self-administered scales and a dating history questionnaire.Subjects--Topical Terms:

There is also no support for a relationship between number of dating partners, help seeking, relationship skill and dating violence perpetration. Support is found for a relationship between victimization and number of dating partners, age, and relationship skill. Support is also found for a relationship of age and attitudes to perpetration. Differences are found between rates of victimization for males and females. Rates of perpetration between males and females are essentially the same.
