The purpose of this study was to determine if health/fitness facilities are complying with the recommended ACSM guidelines. Specifically, guidelines associated with staffing, screening, emergency procedures, testing and prescription and facility will be assessed. These guidelines represent liability issues for health/fitness facilities, yet previous studies suggest that facilities may not be compliant with these guidelines. A nationwide, cross-sectional, email based survey was sent to managers of facilities listed in their respective directories of the Medical Fitness Association (MFA), the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), American Worksite Health Promotion (AWHP) and the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a A total of 84 responses were used for data analysis. Of those 84 responses, ten (11.9%) surveys were from corporate facilities, ten (11.9%) surveys were from hospital facilities, twenty-one (25%) were from freestanding or public facilities, thirty-eight (45.2%) were from college/university facilities and five (6%) facilities gave no response to type of facility question.
520 $a The information from this sample indicates that corporate and hospital health/fitness centers had higher compliance than public and university/college facilities. University/college facilities had the lowest compliance out of all the facility types within this sample. Level of compliance of specific ACSM guidelines was not a predictor of the number of medical emergencies at a facility.
