Cha Shih-piao (1615–1698), the merchant-scholar, calligrapher, poet, professional painter, seal carver, connoisseur and collector, was originally from Anhui province in southern China. Traditionally Cha is considered one of the four Anhui masters (as defined here Anhui masters includes: Sun I (act. 1630s–1650s, Wang Chih-jui (act. 1640s–1650s), Hung jen (1610–1663) and Cha Shih-piao). Cha Shih-piao was the most prolific of these four, but no one has explained that Cha spent almost fifty years (1649–1698) in Yangchou where we can trace his activities as a highly successful professional painter. The purpose of this study is to examine Cha Shih-piao's accomplishments both in Anhui and in Yangchou.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study first addresses Cha Shih-piao's family background and his circle of collectors and friends in Anhui. An analysis of Cha's works produced in this context follows. This study continues with an explanation of Cha Shih-piao's move to Yangchou and how his exposure to a larger circle of painters, patrons, collectors, poets, playwrights, and Ming loyalists transformed his art. In conclusion, this study establishes Cha Shih-piao's status as one of the most prominent late seventeenth century Yangchou painters.
