The present study was a pilot scientific response to the rapidly growing concern on the large body of rural migrant population and its potential role in HIV/AIDS transmission and control in China, which is the most populous country in the world, where the HIV epidemic is now rapidly spreading from injection drug users and previous plasma donors to sexually active heterosexuals. This was a community-based, cross-sectional study conducted among 1,086 male rural migrants who were currently working in construction sites, markets or factories. An anonymous questionnaire interview was carried out to learn their HIV/AIDS and STDs related knowledge, attitudes and beliefs, as well as sexual behaviors. Blood and urine samples were collected simultaneously to identify the prevalence and determinants of STDs. We found that migrants from construction sites, markets and factories were different in social and demographic background. Their knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STDs and condom use was very limited and needs to be improved. Condoms were rarely used for sex. The awareness of being at potential risks of HIV/AIDS and STDs was extremely low among rural migrants. Younger people were more likely to have earlier onset of sexual experience, more sexual acts, more premarital sex and multiple sexual partnerships. Homosexual activities were observed but extremely rare. Commercial sex was not very common. The overall prevalence of STDs was 4.7% (95% CI: 3.4%–6.1%). Most cases were infected with chlamydia. Risk factors for living with an STD were longer time since migration (OR, 2.61; 95% CI: 1.12–6.07), frequent home visiting (OR, 2.95; 95% CI: 1.16–7.48), working in a factory (OR, 2.72; 95% CI: 1.08–6.86), never heard of condoms (OR, 3.57; 95% CI: 1.10–11.11), having multiple sexual partners (OR, 2.18; 95% CI: 0.92–5.15), and wish to have multiple sexual partnerships (OR, 2.26; 95% CI: 1.05–4.87).Subjects--Topical Terms:
