Thesis (Ph.D.)--Universite de Montreal (Canada), 2003.
Loosely inspired by some ideas developped by Gloek and Stark (1965), I have analysed four groups of Catholic integralists active in Quebec under the five following dimensions: the ideological dimension (beliefs), the ritual dimension (practices), the dimension of experience (religious sentiments), the intellectual dimension (knowledge) and the consequential dimension (secular effects of religion). Based on this model and others (Cuneo, 1997 and Vaillancourt and Geoffroy, 1996), I have elaborated a typology of catholic integralist groups. Among these traditionalists, some are excluded from the church and others exclude themselves; but some of them managed, albeit with some difficulties, to officially stay within the church. I have abandoned an earlier distinction between the groups that are homegrown and those that are essentially foreign (from outside the country). I have introduced a new distinction between traditionalist-integralists groups and mystical-esoterics groups. Making this distinction allowed me to come up with the four following sub-types of integralism: the schismatic traditionalists-integralists (the Pius X Fraternity), the non-schismatic traditionalists-integralists (the White Berets), the schismatic mysticalesoteric (the Apostles of Infinite Love) and the non-schismatic mystical-esoteric (the Army of Mary). In my doctoral thesis, I confirmed the validity of this new typology by making a case study of the four above mentioned ideal-types.
