Clement Greenberg was considered to be the most important American art critic during the 1940's, 50's, and 60's. The manner in which his influence shaped the profile of significant movements in American art and the destiny of the careers of artists, continues to be the subject of much controversy within the art world. In the course of this dissertation, Greenberg's dual role both as an intermediary between the artist and the public, and an active personal advisor to artists in their studios, are closely examined.Subjects--Topical Terms:

An analysis of his theories of aesthetics, style in painting and the avant-garde, is discussed as necessary background for an understanding of how and why he chose to support and promote certain styles of art, exclusive of all others.

A chronological examination of a catalogue of his reviews of Jackson Pollock's painting during the period 1943 through 1955, gives insight into the evolution and substance of Greenberg's critical theory as it emerged in conjunction with his creation of Pollock as a champion of the period. His critical work developed simultaneously with the emergence of the avant-garde in New York and was colored by the dispersion of the European art community in the course of W.W.II, and flourished with the subsequent establishment of New York as the new center of world focus in the post-war decades.

With the establishment of Clement Greenberg as a powerful and influential critic, his role changed from that of an equal partner in a symbiotic relationship to that of a mentor/critic who projected his thinking into the studios of the artists in such a way that it directly moulded and shaped their art-making. The manifestation of this new role is intimately studied through personal interviews and observations of studio visits. Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski and selected post painterly abstractionists are the focus of this investigation.
