Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) utilizes the envelope protein gp120 to bind host cells and leads to the establishment of infection. Recent studies have shown that simian gp120 may have epitopes that are similar to epitopes in the variable region of some human immunoglobulins idiotypes. This similarity may allow the virus to evade the immune response and, as antibodies are produced against the virus, may lead to the development of autoreactive anti-idiotype antibodies.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a To expand these observations on HIV-1gp120, twenty-one anti-HIV-1 gp120 antibodies were screened to determine their ability to cross-react with four human immunoglobulins. The antibodies 257-DIV and F425-B4a1 appeared to cross-react with a human immunoglobulin PAMLN6, but not with other human immunoglobulins. This study indicates that HIV-1 gp120 does present epitopes that are similar to some human immunoglobulins and that the potential exists for the development of autoreactive antiidiotype antibodies during the course of HIV infection.
