Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1997.
Using centrifuge modeling as main tool to investigate the effect of permanent lateral ground displacements due to seismically induced liquefaction and lateral spreading, on both single pile and pile group systems. As both case histories and theory indicate that the interfaces between liquefied and nonliquefied soil layers are critical to the pile foundations, these centrifuge tests necessarily had to include 2 or 3 layers. All centrifuge tests are conducted at the 100 g-ton RPI centrifuge, using the inclined laminar box and model piles as research tools. The specific objectives of this study to be accomplished mainly through the centrifuge experiments and corresponding interpretations and comparisons. Test results were used to develop a simple limiting equilibrium method to evaluate the maximum bending moment in single pile and pile group.
