This thesis seeks to explore literature's role in moral epistemology. The intention here is to explain some ways in which literature can help us improve morally, with particular attention to its ability to provide us with non-propositional knowledge. Of special importance here is how the aesthetic aspects of literature contribute to providing us with this non-propositional knowledge. This thesis explores these issues by examining two examples of ways that literature can have an influence on our moral improvement by giving us access to non-propositional knowledge.

According to Nussbaum, literature can teach us moral perception, which she shows to be of great importance in our ability to be moral creatures. This moral perception involves the ability to see the intricate details of people and the moral situations that they face.
520 $a Second of all, the thesis examines a combination of authors including Alison Jaggar, Naomi Scheman, Martha Nussbaum, Audre Lorde, Dorothy Allison, and Jean-Paul Sartre that shows us yet more possible ways in which literature can help us improve morally. Taken together, they show that literature can help bring us to better understand our emotions, and that developing emotionally in this way can lead to moral development.
